Women's Initiatives
"Society as a whole benefits immeasurably from a climate in which all persons, regardless of race or gender, may have the opportunity to earn respect, responsibility, advancement and remuneration based on ability." - Sandra Day O'Connor
At Dewey & LeBoeuf, we consistently encourage women to succeed. Throughout the history of both legacy firms, women have played an active role in shaping the firm's culture and identity. In 1925, our firm was one of the first law firms to hire women attorneys when it hired Dorothy N. Cook of Yale Law School. As of February 2008, nearly 17 percent of partners at Dewey & LeBoeuf (44 females) are women, three of whom are members of the firm's Executive Committee.
Furthermore, we have a long-standing history of supporting women's issues through pro bono cases. Examples of these include:
-
Pro bono representation of victims of domestic violence and clients in custody and child support proceedings;
-
Pro bono representation of Girls, Inc., a non-profit organization that teaches young girls how to approach new challenges;
-
Service to organizations such as the Suzy Lamplugh Trust (a charity that addresses issues of personal safety for women), Women Empowered Against Violence (an organization providing legal services to victims of domestic violence), YWCA (an organization the mission of which is to eliminate racism and empower women) and inMotion (an organization defending domestic rights of women);
-
Membership in Catalyst, a leading research and advisory organization working with businesses and professions build inclusive environments and expand opportunities for women at work; and
-
Sponsorship of events, including Talking 9 to 5: A Presentation on Men and Women Communicating at Work and National Women's History Month - Past Perspectives and Future Opportunities for Women in the Profession, business development presentations, training programs and conferences focusing on topics such as rainmaking for women, diversity and leadership.
Recognizing the importance of strengthening the representation and the development of women within the firm, Dewey & LeBoeuf is dedicated to the further enhancement of our current initiatives to help support and advance women lawyers at our firm.
